What changing grip mid-point costs a player
Grip changes are invisible from the stands and they consume time the player often does not have, which is why so many awkward shots are really grip decisions gone wrong.

Why grips exist at all
The angle of the racquet face at contact is largely determined by how the hand sits on the handle, and different shots require different faces. A grip suited to hitting heavy topspin from below the ball closes the face, while one suited to flat contact at shoulder height opens it. No single grip covers every contact height, which is why players carry two or three and move between them during a rally.
The transitions are the hidden cost, because each one has to be completed before the racquet begins its swing towards the ball. In a fast exchange there may not be enough time, and the player is forced to hit the shot with the wrong face and compensate with his wrist.
The non-dominant hand does the work
The change is not made by the hitting hand loosening and rotating; it is made by the other hand cradling the racquet throat and turning it. That is one of the main functions of the free hand during the recovery phase, and players who let it drop are slower to prepare every shot. It also explains why a player's ready position matters: the racquet has to be held in front of the body where the free hand can reach it.
Players whose racquet drifts to one side after a shot are adding a movement before the grip change can even begin. This is a small mechanical habit that compounds across a long rally, and it is one of the clearest differences between trained and untrained movement.
Grip determines the contact height a player can attack
A player using an extreme grip on the forehand is comfortable striking the ball high, since the closed face keeps a rising ball inside the court. The same grip struggles with a low sliced ball, because the face must be opened by the wrist alone and control becomes precarious. A flatter grip has the opposite profile, handling low balls comfortably and losing control on anything above shoulder height.
Opponents exploit this directly, feeding balls into the height where the grip is least suited rather than trying to overpower the shot. That is why a low slice is effective against some players and a high heavy topspin against others, and why the choice is made by scouting the grip.
The volley and the change that cannot be made
Approaching the net requires a grip suited to blocking rather than swinging, and the change has to happen during the approach itself. Players who arrive still holding a groundstroke grip either volley with a closed face into the net or make the change while the ball is arriving. This is why net play looks so much more difficult for players who spend most of their time on the baseline, even when their hands are good.
The continental grip that most volleys require is a compromise that handles both sides without changing, which is precisely why it is used up there. Its cost is that it produces very little topspin, which is acceptable at the net and unacceptable from the baseline.
Serving, returning and the same problem
The serve is hit with a grip that is poor for almost every groundstroke, so the server has a change to make immediately after contact. That change happens during the landing and the first recovery steps, and a server who is hurried by a fast return may not complete it. The result is a first ball hit with an unfamiliar face, which is one reason the shot after the serve is unreliable for many players.
Returners face a related problem, since the grip must be chosen before the serve's direction is known and cannot be changed once the ball is travelling. The usual solution is to hold a neutral grip and accept a slightly compromised shot on both wings rather than a good one on the wrong side.
