What the crease actually offers

The permitted width of the crease is one of the few resources a bowler can spend without touching his action, and it is routinely underused. Releasing from the edge of the crease rather than beside the stumps changes the angle into the batter by a degree that looks trivial and plays as anything but. Because the batter aligns his stance and his trigger movement before the bowler reaches delivery stride, that angle arrives after his shape is already committed.

The effect compounds with the length, since a ball angled across a batter on a fuller length asks him to reach further than his balance comfortably allows. None of this requires the bowler to alter grip, wrist or run-up, which is why the accuracy penalty is so much smaller than it is for a change of pace.

The cost of changing pace instead

A slower ball demands a different grip or a different wrist position, and both introduce a genuine risk of the delivery landing far from where it was aimed. That risk is acceptable when the batter is set and the bowler needs a genuine surprise, but it is expensive as a routine tool used several times an over. There is also a disclosure problem, because most slower balls are visible in the hand or in the arm speed to a batter who is watching for them.

Angle carries none of that disclosure, since the batter has to detect a change in the bowler's starting position while also tracking the ball and the field. The practical result is that pace variation works best as a punctuation mark, while angle can be varied continuously as the underlying grammar of a spell.

Wide of the stumps and the outside edge

Delivering from wide on the crease and slanting the ball across the batter creates a line that invites a drive without offering the room to complete it safely. The batter's hands travel away from his body to meet the ball, the front elbow straightens early, and the bat face arrives at an angle he did not choose. Any lateral movement then works with the angle rather than against it, so a delivery that holds its line still finds the edge because the bat has come to it.

The corresponding weakness is the leg side, where a ball that fails to hold its line becomes a comfortable clip through a vacant area. This is why the wide-of-the-crease plan usually travels with a specific field, protecting the region the angle deliberately leaves open.

Close to the stumps and the front pad

Bowling from tight against the stumps produces the opposite geometry, straightening the line and putting the front pad directly into the path of the ball. A batter who has been playing an angled ball across him has grooved a slightly open shape, and that shape leaves a gap between bat and pad when the line straightens. The threat is not only the edge but the pad itself, since a ball that would have missed the stumps from wide is suddenly hitting them from close.

The batter's counter is to play straighter and later, which costs him the scoring options square of the wicket that the previous angle had made available. Alternating between the two positions therefore squeezes the batter between two different shapes, neither of which serves him well for long.

Making the change hard to see

The value of the angle collapses if the batter can read the starting position early, so bowlers hide the change inside an unchanged approach. Beginning the run-up from the same mark and drifting only in the final strides keeps the batter's eye on a familiar shape until it is too late to re-align. Some bowlers go further and vary the width without any pattern at all, precisely so that a batter cannot use the previous delivery to predict the next one.

The discipline this requires is real, because landing the ball on the same spot from two different starting points is a genuinely different skill each time. Bowlers who practise it end up with two distinct sets of muscle memory rather than one adjustable set, which is why the change looks so seamless from the other end.
