Watching a dismissal in isolation makes it look like a single good ball. Most planned wickets are the final step of a sequence built across an over or several overs.

The over is the unit of planning

A bowler cannot bowl the ideal ball on demand, but six consecutive deliveries from the same end give enough repetition to establish an expectation in the batter's mind.

Expectation is the target. A batter who has faced four balls on a consistent length begins moving into position slightly earlier, trusting the pattern rather than reading each ball fully.

The wicket ball is then the one that breaks the pattern, and it works because the batter has already committed to a movement before the ball reveals itself.

Line and length build the frame

A seam bowler will typically bowl repeated deliveries just outside off stump on a full-ish length, drawing the batter forward and across without offering a scoring option.

Those balls are not wasted even when they are left alone. Each one reinforces the batter's assumption about where the ball will pitch and how far forward to press.

The change can then be minimal. A ball a fraction shorter or slightly wider exploits a front foot already planted, which is why setup deliveries look unremarkable in isolation.

The field is part of the sequence

Field placements advertise intent, and skilled batters read them. A bowler can use that by setting a field for one plan while executing another.

Placing a deep square leg suggests a short ball is coming and invites the batter to prepare for the pull. A full ball into that mindset finds a batter rocking back.

The reverse also works. A packed off-side ring implies containment outside off, which makes a straight ball at the stumps arrive against a batter shaping to play square.

Spin uses flight rather than length

A spinner's setup runs on trajectory. Several deliveries with the same loop and pace train the batter's judgement of where the ball will drop, which governs the decision to advance or stay.

Changing the release so the ball is fractionally quicker and flatter defeats that judgement. The batter has already begun a stride based on a flight path the ball is not following.

This is why spinners often concede a boundary immediately before a wicket. The looser ball invites the aggressive movement that the following delivery punishes.

Sequences carry across spells

Against a batter who is settled, a single over rarely suffices, so bowlers extend the plan across a session and store the payoff for a later spell.

The record of the earlier overs still exists in the batter's habits. A pattern reinforced through twenty deliveries survives a break in play, and can be broken when conditions favour the bowler.

Captains manage this deliberately, holding a bowler back until the ball or the pitch supplies the variation the earlier overs were preparing the batter to misread.
