In long-form cricket a fielding captain may take a new ball once the innings passes a set number of overs. The decision of exactly when is rarely automatic.

What the new ball restores

A fresh ball has a proud seam, a hard core and an intact lacquer, which together restore the seam movement, bounce and carry that an eighty-over ball has lost.

Bowlers who rely on those properties become immediately more dangerous. A seamer whose stock delivery had become predictable regains the ability to beat the bat off the pitch.

The catching field can be rebuilt at the same time, so slips and a gully return and the fielding side goes back to an attacking configuration.

The cost is faster scoring

A hard ball also travels off the bat more quickly, so any edge that beats the cordon runs away and any mistimed drive still reaches the boundary.

Set batters frequently welcome the new ball because it removes the difficulty of scoring against a soft ball on a flat surface with a spread field.

A captain who takes it at the wrong moment can convert a controlled passage into a rapid partnership, which is the risk that makes the timing genuinely difficult.

Bowler condition drives the timing

The value of a new ball depends entirely on having bowlers fresh enough to use it, so captains often delay a few overs to allow a key seamer to complete a rest period.

Taking a new ball with tired bowlers wastes the best twenty overs of its life, because the hardness that produces movement also fades quickly under sustained use.

Captains therefore manage the preceding overs backwards from the intended moment, using part-time bowlers or spin to hold the innings together while the seamers recover.

Reverse swing argues for delay

If the old ball has begun to reverse, the fielding side already possesses a wicket-taking weapon, and discarding it in favour of conventional movement can be a downgrade.

Reverse swing also tends to trouble lower-order batters more than a hard new ball, which travels straight and can be defended with a simple technique.

Sides bowling at a tail with a reversing ball frequently refuse the new ball for many overs, taking it only once the innings resistance has hardened again.

Light and session timing matter

Captains prefer to introduce a new ball with enough time remaining in a session to complete a full spell, rather than surrender its best overs to an interval.

Deteriorating light also favours it, since a hard ball that carries to the cordon is more valuable when batters are struggling to pick up the seam.

The combination of these constraints means the decision is usually made several overs in advance and communicated to the bowlers, not taken on impulse at the mark.
