Players moving onto grass make small technical adjustments that are rarely visible from a distance. Those adjustments determine who copes with the transition and who does not.

Contact happens lower than elsewhere

A ball skidding off grass frequently arrives below knee height, whereas on clay the same shot might be met at waist or chest level.

That difference changes which grip is comfortable, since extreme grips designed for high contact require the wrist to be laid back in a position that low balls do not allow.

Players with flatter grips make contact naturally at that height, which is why some struggle on grass while others transition within a match or two.

The legs replace the wrist

To reach a low ball with a controlled swing, the player must lower the whole body rather than dropping the racket head, which means bending deeply at the knees.

That posture is more demanding than the upright stance used on higher-bouncing surfaces, and it must be held while moving rather than from a stationary position.

Grass-court preparation therefore emphasises leg strength and low movement patterns, since the technique depends on being able to hold the position repeatedly.

Slice becomes a primary shot

A sliced backhand keeps the ball low after the bounce, and on a surface that already produces a low bounce the resulting ball can be very difficult to attack.

Players with a reliable slice therefore gain a shot that is defensive on other surfaces and offensive here, which changes how they construct points.

The same shot also suits the low contact point, since slice is struck with an open face and a downward path that works comfortably below the knee.

Footwork becomes shorter and more frequent

Sliding is unreliable on grass, so players stop with small adjusting steps rather than arriving in one long movement as they would on clay.

Those extra steps must be taken earlier, which means the read of the opponent's shot has to happen sooner to allow time for the adjustment.

Players who arrive late compensate by reaching, and a reaching contact on a low ball produces a shot with almost no control over depth.

The return position shifts forward

Standing deep on grass is unproductive, because a skidding serve stays low and a deep returner meets it near ankle height with no time to set the feet.

Returners consequently move closer and block the ball rather than swinging, using the server's pace and prioritising depth over placement.

That forward position also shortens the angle available to the server, which is the same geometric trade made on other surfaces but applied more aggressively here.
