Rebounding is commonly attributed to size and leaping ability. The majority of rebounds are collected without a contested jump, and position accounts for most of the outcome.

The ball goes to predictable places

A missed shot rebounds in a direction related to the angle it arrived from, so shots from the wing tend to rebound to the opposite side of the basket.

Shot distance governs how far the ball travels, with long attempts producing long rebounds and short attempts producing balls that stay close to the rim.

Players who track where the shot came from can move towards the likely landing area while others are still watching the flight.

Blocking out is about time, not force

Making contact with an opponent and turning to face the basket prevents him moving towards the ball for a second or two, which is usually the whole contest.

The purpose is not to push the opponent away but to hold him behind while the rebounder's own path to the ball remains open.

A rebounder who jumps immediately without making contact leaves the opponent free to move, and the ball frequently lands where neither of them is.

The second jump matters more than the first

Contested rebounds often involve the ball being tipped rather than caught, so the player who returns to the ground fastest and jumps again secures it.

That favours a quick, repeatable jump over a single high one, which is why some players out-rebound taller opponents consistently.

Hand position is part of it, with rebounders keeping the hands above the shoulders so that the arms do not need to be raised before jumping.

Offensive rebounding uses different angles

An offensive rebounder is starting behind a defender, so the approach is lateral rather than vertical, moving around the block-out rather than through it.

Attacking from the baseline side is common, since the defender's body is usually turned towards the middle and the baseline route is the shorter path.

Timing the move to begin as the shot is released rather than after it lands gives the rebounder momentum against a defender who is stationary.

Team structure sets the ceiling

An individual rebounder can only collect balls that reach his area, so team spacing on defence determines how many opportunities exist for each player.

Teams that switch frequently often end up with guards blocking out bigger players, which is a structural cost of the scheme rather than a failure of effort.

Coaches account for this by assigning specific rebounding responsibilities after switches, so the nearest player takes the block-out regardless of the original matchup.
