The powerplay and the final overs attract most attention, but the middle phase is where the majority of T20 innings are shaped. The bowling approach there is distinct.

The field restrictions change the target

Once the powerplay ends, more fielders are permitted outside the ring, so boundaries become substantially harder to hit and the batting side's scoring shifts towards running.

A bowling side's aim in this phase is therefore not primarily to take wickets but to force the batters to accept singles rather than boundaries.

Every over that passes without a boundary raises the rate the batting side must achieve later, and that accumulated pressure is what eventually produces a wicket.

Spin dominates for structural reasons

Spin bowling is well suited to the phase because a slower ball with a spread field is difficult to hit over the boundary without taking substantial risk.

A spinner also bowls to a field that can be set precisely, since the ball arrives at a predictable pace and the scoring areas are more consistent than against seam.

Sides accordingly build squads with multiple spin options, often of different types, so a captain can match the bowler's turn to the batters at the crease.

Match-ups drive the bowling changes

Teams hold detailed records of how individual batters score against particular bowling types, and use the middle overs to force unfavourable pairings.

A batter who struggles against the ball turning away will face that bowler as soon as he arrives, which is why a wicket often triggers an immediate bowling change.

The batting side counters by rotating strike deliberately to give the more comfortable batter the majority of that bowler's deliveries.

The wide field is a scoring constraint

With fielders on the boundary, batters looking to accelerate must clear them entirely, and a mistimed shot is caught rather than dropping safely inside the ring.

Bowlers exploit this by aiming for lengths that are hard to hit along the ground, forcing the batter to choose between a low-percentage aerial shot and a single.

Slower balls and wide lines are the standard tools, since both remove the pace the batter needs to clear a long boundary.

The phase sets up the finish

A batting side that reaches the final overs with wickets in hand can attack every ball, so the bowling side's middle-overs goal includes taking enough wickets to prevent that.

The two objectives conflict, because the containing lengths that restrict scoring are not the lengths that produce dismissals.

Captains resolve this by alternating, using a containing bowler at one end and an attacking option at the other, so the batting side faces both problems in the same over pair.
