Scouting once meant sending an analyst to watch a match. A large share of opposition preparation is now derived from structured data covering many more matches than anyone could watch.

Event data records what happened

Every pass, shot, tackle and duel in a match can be logged with a location and an outcome, producing a structured record of the events in a fixture.

Aggregated across a season, that record shows where a team tends to progress the ball, which areas it attacks and where it concedes possession.

Those patterns are far more reliable than impressions from a single match, since one fixture reflects the opponent as much as the team being studied.

Tracking data records what did not happen

Optical tracking captures the position of every player continuously, including the players not involved in the action, which event data by definition omits.

That allows analysis of shape, spacing and pressing distances, which are the elements that determine whether a team's structure is compact or stretched.

It also permits counterfactual questions, such as which passing options existed at a given moment, which cannot be answered from a record of the pass that was actually played.

The output is a set of tendencies, not predictions

Analysis produces statements about what a team usually does rather than what it will do, since opponents adjust and any pattern can be abandoned.

The value lies in narrowing the range of expectations, so players are prepared for the most likely situations rather than for every possibility.

Coaches also look for what a team does under specific conditions, such as when trailing or when facing a particular shape, since tendencies vary by context.

Video remains necessary for interpretation

Data identifies where to look but rarely explains why a pattern exists, and the explanation determines whether it can be exploited.

A team conceding chances from a particular area might be doing so because of a structural flaw or because of one player's positioning, and only footage distinguishes them.

Analysts therefore use data to select clips rather than to replace them, which is a substantial reduction in viewing time rather than an elimination of it.

Recruitment uses the same infrastructure

The systems built for opposition analysis also support player identification, since the same records describe individuals across leagues a club could never watch comprehensively.

The difficulty is comparability, because performance in one competition does not transfer directly to another with different intensity and different tactical demands.

Clubs handle this with adjustment models and then verify the shortlist through conventional scouting, which keeps the human judgement at the end of the process rather than the start.
