Why Grass Rewards The First Strike

The low, fast bounce of a grass court shortens the time available to recover, which makes the opening shots of a point disproportionately decisive.

Points on grass are shorter than on other surfaces, and the reason is not that players choose to be aggressive. The surface removes the recovery time defence depends on.

The bounce stays low

Grass is a soft surface laid over firm soil, and a ball striking it skids rather than gripping, so it retains more forward speed and rises less.

A low ball must be struck with a flatter swing path, which reduces the amount of topspin a player can apply and therefore reduces the margin over the net.

Defensive shots that would loop safely on clay travel flatter on grass and land shorter, giving the attacking player an easier next ball.

Recovery time is the scarce resource

A ball that skids arrives sooner after the bounce, so a player pulled wide has less time to return to a neutral position before the next shot.

That deficit compounds, since each shot in the rally begins from a slightly worse position than the last, and there is no phase in which balance is regained.

On slower surfaces the same player recovers between shots and can extend the rally until an opening appears, which is why long rallies are far more common there.

The serve gains disproportionately

A serve is already the fastest shot in tennis, and a surface that preserves speed and keeps the bounce low increases the number of serves that cannot be returned cleanly.

Returners consequently stand further back or accept a blocked return, both of which concede the initiative to the server for the following shot.

Service games are therefore harder to break, and matches turn on a small number of points rather than on accumulated pressure across many games.

Movement is different as well as faster

Grass offers less predictable footing, and players take shorter steps with a lower centre of gravity to maintain balance on a surface that can be slick.

Shorter steps limit how far a player can travel in a given time, which further reduces effective court coverage beyond what the ball speed alone would cause.

The combined effect is that the geometric area a defender can protect is smaller on grass, so an aggressive shot needs less accuracy to be a winner.

The surface changes across the fortnight

Early in a tournament the grass is dense and even, and the skid is at its most pronounced, which favours servers most strongly.

As the courts wear, particularly behind the baselines and around the service boxes, the bounce becomes higher and more variable.

Play in the later rounds therefore begins to resemble hard-court tennis, with longer rallies, which is a change in the surface rather than in the players remaining.
