Why High Jump Approach Curves Are Coached First
The curved run-up in high jump is not stylistic, since the lean it produces is what allows the jumper to rotate over the bar without lifting the hips higher.

High jumpers approach the bar on a curve rather than a straight line. That curve performs a mechanical function which the takeoff itself cannot supply.
The curve creates lean without effort
Running a curve requires the body to lean inward to balance the centripetal force, in the same way a cyclist leans through a corner.
That lean means the jumper arrives at takeoff already tilted away from the bar, with the centre of mass positioned low relative to the takeoff foot.
Straightening from that lean during the takeoff adds vertical displacement without any additional muscular work, which is the curve's primary contribution.
Rotation is generated on the ground
Clearing the bar back-first requires the body to rotate in two planes, and that rotation must be initiated while the foot is still in contact with the ground.
The curved approach supplies the horizontal component, since the body is already turning as it plants, and the plant converts that turn into rotation about the long axis.
A jumper approaching straight would have to create the rotation with the arms and free leg alone, which uses energy that would otherwise go into height.
The last three strides do the work
The approach's final strides are where the lean is deepest and the hips are lowest, which sets the position from which the takeoff extends.
Jumpers deliberately lower the centre of mass across these strides, lengthening the range through which the takeoff leg can extend.
Errors here cannot be corrected at takeoff, which is why coaches treat approach consistency as the foundation and the jump itself as a consequence of it.
Curve radius is individual
A faster jumper needs a larger radius to produce a manageable lean, while a slower approach requires a tighter curve to generate the same effect.
The radius also interacts with the takeoff point, since the jumper must arrive at a consistent distance from the bar with the shoulders in the correct alignment.
Athletes therefore mark the approach precisely and check it repeatedly during warm-up, adjusting for wind and for the surface's grip.
Bar clearance is a shape problem
Once airborne the centre of mass follows a fixed path, so the only way to clear a higher bar with the same jump is to arrange the body around that path efficiently.
Arching over the bar allows the body's segments to pass above it in sequence while the centre of mass travels lower, which is the whole logic of the technique.
The final action is snapping the legs upward after the hips have passed, which is the most common point of failure and the last element coached in the sequence.
